Misa Tinks
Misa Tinks is a cartoonish character that I originally developed at the request of an acquaintance who was interested in
designing a Zelda-like game. The first image below is the original concept sketch that I made of "a young female elf-like
character". The second image is my revision of the character design after receiving further feedback
from my friend. The third image is the final character sketch/rotoscope that would have been used if we had moved forward on the
game concept.
Although the game she was designed for never made it past the conceptual stages, Misa continued on. Using the final
sketch as a rotoscope, I modeled a simplified version of Misa in Hash:Animation Master. I then animated four test
animations of Misa to use as examples in the animation class that I co-instruct at UMass.
The first animation is of Misa waving to the camera and is used as an example of creating readable and interesting
body poses. The second animation is of Misa jumping (and hitting a ball) and is used as an example of timing, anticipation and
follow-through. The third animation is of Misa standing from a seated position and is used as an example of secondary-action
(the arms coming to rest). The fourth animation is of Misa lifting an object and is used as an example of animating mass.
For the curious, Misa Tinks' name pokes fun at the most annoying character of the most disappointing movie of 1999.
